PNG vs JPG for Instagram Posts and Stories

The simple rule set for choosing the right format before export.

Use JPG when your image is mostly photographic and you want smaller file sizes. Use PNG when your asset depends on sharp text, screenshots, simple gradients, or flat-color graphics that can soften too much after aggressive compression.

Choose JPG when

• the post is photo-led
• you need smaller file size
• slight compression softness is acceptable

Choose PNG when

• the design contains small text
• you are exporting screenshots or UI mockups
• clean hard edges matter more than lower file size

What matters most

Format choice helps, but correct dimensions and clean export settings matter just as much. A badly sized PNG can still look worse than a correctly exported JPG.
